Gig Of The Week: Iggy & the Stooges, Michigan Palace, 9th Feb 1974

Stooges concerts were pretty anarchic on an average night, but put them in front of a hometown crowd just as the band was about to splinter and all hell was sure to break loose. As Iggy Pop and company took the stage of this run-down 1920s movie theater for their last performance, it quickly became their most confrontational ever. The show featured loud, lurching versions of Stooges staples (“Raw Power,” “Gimme Danger”) and new songs (“Cock In My Pocket”) before crashing and burning with an X-rated version of “Louie Louie” - with frontman and audience exchanging insults and projectiles from start to finish. Had there been such a thing as a “dead pool” in February, 1974, Iggy would've topped the list; more than 40 years later, he's still going strong and the Stooges are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
