With an attention-getting role in box office hit Desperately Seeking Susan and three Platinum albums to her credit, Madonna was a movie-star-in-waiting when she appeared in WHO'S THAT GIRL. The comedic adventure-mystery, in which the singer plays a woman who must clear her name of murder, did little to advance her film career but the soundtrack is another story. Featuring four Madonna originals plus cuts by Scritti Politti, Coati Mundi, and Club Nouveau, the WHO'S THAT GIRL album went Top 10 in the U.S, selling more than six million copies worldwide. The Madonna songs are “Can't Stop,” the ballad “The Look Of Love,” the No.2 hit “Causing A Commotion” and the title track, which was the #1 song in America on this day in 1987. With TRUE BLUE producers Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray supplying studio polish, the soundtrack's distinctive dance pop ensured that listeners never had to ask “who's that girl?”
