Upon the dissolution of The Yardbirds, guitarist Jimmy Page brought his band on the road as The New Yardbirds to fulfill contractual obligations before the quartet made its official live debut as “Led Zeppelin” on this day in 1968. The group’s debut album would be released early the following year on Atlantic Records and includes such perfected-on-tour songs as “Dazed and Confused,” “Communication Breakdown” and “Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.” Recorded quickly at London's Olympic Studios with Page supervising the production, LED ZEPPELIN was a commercial hit, reaching the Top Ten (and eventually going multi-Platinum). A heavy metal landmark, the set has been cited by Rolling Stone as one of the top 30 albums of all time.
