Lindsey Buckingham released GO INSANE during a Fleetwood Mac hiatus and this second solo album underlines the performer’s many talents; aided by a Fairlight synthesizer and Linn drum machine, the singer-songwriter plays virtually all the instruments. While “Slow Dancing” and the Top 40 hit title track reflect Buckingham’s knack for accessible singles (People magazine declared the album “studded with power pop gems”), the collection also explores more ambitious territory on the musique concrète two-parter “Play in the Rain” and the Laurie Anderson-esque “Bang the Drum.” Lindsey Buckingham was born on this day in 1949, and we’ll wish him a happy birthday with the 1984 tour de force GO INSANE.
