What’s That Song? “Giving Up” / “Still Tippin’” – Queen & Slim
If you haven’t yet seen the critical acclaimed romantic drama Queen & Slim, then you’ve probably at least seen a trailer for them, but if you’ve seen both, then you might have some questions about the songs you’ve heard during the course of the two…and we’re here to help.
During the second trailer for the film, the late Donny Hathaway takes center stage with his song “Giving Up,” a single from his self-titled 1971 album. The track only hit #81 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its initial release, but it climbed to #21 on the R&B Singles chart, making it his biggest solo hit since “The Ghetto – Part 1.”
As for “Still Tippin’,” it’s actually in the film and on the soundtrack, and it appears on Mike Jones’ 2005 album WHO IS MIKE JONES? The track is a collaboration with Jones, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall, and it was the first single from Jones’s album. It hit #60 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it went to #26 on the R&B Singles chart and to #14 on the Rap Singles chart, so it was a pretty big deal at the time of its release. That was almost 20 years ago, though, so it’s about time it had a renaissance, don’t you think?
We’ve put together a playlist that includes both Hathaway’s album and Jones’s album, so give it a spin!
