Rhino Factoids: Richard Pryor and Rhino win a Grammy Award

15 years ago today, Rhino Records took home the Grammy Award for Best Album Notes for the Richard Pryor box set, …AND IT’S DEEP, TOO! THE COMPLETE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS (1968-1992).

Originally released on October 17, 2000, …AND IT’S DEEP, TOO! was an impressive collection of Pryor’s classic stand-up comedy, featuring the eight albums he released on Warner Brothers between 1968 and 1983 –RICHARD PRYOR (1968), THAT NIGGER’S CRAZY (1974), …IS IT SOMETHING I SAID? (1975), BICENTENNIAL NIGGER (1976), WANTED/RICHARD PRYOR – LIVE IN CONCERT (1979), LIVE ON THE SUNSET STRIP (1982), and HERE AND NOW (1983) – along with an additional disc entitled THAT “AFRICAN-AMERICAN” IS STILL CRAZY: GOOD SHIT FROM THE VAULTS (‘70S, ‘80S, and ‘90S).

Yes, you know you’re in for a politically-incorrect compilation when even the album titles make you wince when you type them, but no one’s denying the importance of Pryor’s work. Certainly Walter Moseley isn’t: you may know him as the creator of Easy Rawlins, star of Devil in a Blue Dress and numerous other detective novels, but he took time out of his fiction-writing schedule to pen the liner notes for …AND IT’S DEEP, TOO.

Unfortunately, a portion of the material from the set has since fallen out of our purview, so we can’t offer you the entire set for your listening enjoyment, but we’ve still got more than enough to confirm just how funny Pryor was.
