Out Now: Sepultura, CHAOS A.D.

When Sepultura first came roaring out of Brazil in 1984, the hard rock band’s emphasis was definitely on the roar, but their musical evolution over the course of their career has been considerable, and nowhere is it more evident than in their mid-1990s work. Rhino is revisiting two of Sepultura’s seminal albums from that era, and the first of the pair arrives in stores today: 1993’s CHAOS A.D.

Recorded at Rockfield Studios and Chepstow Castle, Wales, CHAOS A.D. found Sepultura incorporating a groove metal sound into their music, and the end result was an album that has been declared one of the greatest heavy metal LPs of all time. In addition, the singles “Refuse/Resist,” “Territory” and “Slave New World” all received significant airplay, resulting in an increased audience for the band.

If you’re part of that audience, you’re going to love what we’ve culled together for this expanded edition: in addition to a newly remastered version of the original album, there are 17 bonus tracks, including a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Symptom Of The Universe,” nine live versions of album tracks like “Territory” and “Biotech Is Godzilla,” and several unreleased instrumental tracks that the band used during writing sessions for “Clenched Fist” and “Propaganda.” And in case you’re wondering, yes, it’s available digitally, on CD, and on LP, too.
