Out Now: John Coltrane, The Atlantic Years in Mono

In these modern times of ours, you may notice that we have a tendency to release items digitally and on CD first, and then a little bit after that we’ll release things on vinyl. Well, prepare to have your world turned topsy-turvy, because we’ve just reissued John Coltrane’s The Atlantic Years in Mono on vinyl...but you’ll have to wait ‘til July 8 to get the CD!

Jazz fans will argue all day and night about which Coltrane albums are the best, but you won’t likely find anyone who’ll suggest that his work for Atlantic was anything less than solid, which is why we’ve made a point of making these albums that he put out during 1959 and 1960 sound as great as possible.

A quick caveat, however: you will not find My Favorite Things, Coltrane Jazz, or Coltrane's Sound contained within this set, but it’s through no fault of ours: the mono masters were lost in a fire, so their inclusion simply wasn’t possible, sadly. What you will find in the set, however, are Giant Steps (1960), Bags & Trane (1961) with Milt Jackson, Ole Coltrane (1962), Coltrane Plays The Blues (1962), The Avant Garde (1966) with Don Cherry, an LP of outtakes entitled The Coltrane Legacy, a 32-page booklet of photos by Lee Friedlander and liner notes by Ashley Kahn, and a replica of the original 'My Favorite Things Part I & II' 7" single. The latter item is strictly in the vinyl box set, though, so don’t be shocked if you wait for the CD set and find that it’s MIA.

Here’s the full track listing, so you can see what you’re getting yourself into, and be aware that the reissuing arrives in advance of the release of Chasin’ Trane, a new documentary about Coltrane’s life and times, so you either can get prepped and ready before you see it or you can see it comfortable in the knowledge that the set will be in stores when you decide that it’s time to bulk up your Coltrane collection.
