Once Upon a Time in the Top Spot: Nickelback, “How You Remind Me”
18 years ago today, Nickelback sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 with a single that would subsequently receive more U.S. radio airplay during the 2000s than any other song by the band...or any other band, for that matter!
Credited collectively to Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake, and Ryan Vikedal, “How You Remind Me” was – per Chad – written about the decidedly dysfunctional relationship he had with his girlfriend, Jodi. The song was featured as the first single from SILVER SIDE UP, but although it was Nickelback’s third album, it was definitely the one that first put them on the map in a big way, and it was thanks predominantly to “How You Remind Me.” The album’s two subsequent singles, “Too Bad” and “Never Again,” didn’t result in the same degree of chart success, but once you’ve had a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, that’s all people talk about, anyway.
If there was any question that “How You Remind Me” was going to be around for the long haul, that uncertainty came to an abrupt conclusion in 2009, when it was named the #1 most-played song on U.S. radio of the 2000s. Songs like that never fade away, they just continue to be spun over and over and over again...
