Once Upon a Time in the Top Spot: Eagles, THEIR GREATEST HITS
44 years ago today, the Eagles were perched atop the Billboard 200 with their first best-of collection, a compilation which remains a major seller to this day.
If you’re currently reading this piece and thinking, “You know, I would swear that I just read a piece about this album a week ago,” well, you’re wrong, it was actually two weeks ago, so quit your bellyaching! Of course, we’re just messin’ with you. Not about when we posted that piece about the anniversary of the Eagles first going platinum with this LP, though, because that bit’s true. But we can understand why you’d find yourself wondering if you were experiencing déjà vu. Hopefully you’re less startled now, however. After all, given that the album went platinum, it’s not exactly a huge surprise to find out that it also ascended to the #1 spot.
And just in case you didn’t see that article from a few weeks ago, allow us to throw out the key facts from that piece, which are still relevant here: this collection is actually the all-time best-selling album in the U.S., having gone platinum 38x over at this point.
Of course, we never could’ve predicted it’d be that big a seller when it was originally released. But the fact that it went to #1 right off the bat, well, that at least confirmed that it was a collection that we wouldn’t soon forget.
