Never Say Never: VERZUZ Provides Fans with a Brandy / Monica Reunion

Ever heard of VERZUZ? Before the world was stricken by the COVID-19 pandemic, the answer to that question would’ve been a resounding “no,” mostly because it didn’t exist! Back in March, however, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz joined forces for a virtual DJ battle, kicking off this webcast series that has turned into a virtual phenomenon.

As of this writing, there have been two seasons and 19 episodes, with notable music figures teaming up to highlight their discographies, including pairings such as Teddy Riley and Babyface, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, and Ludacris and Nelly. This week, however, viewers got a major reunion, with Brandy and Monica squaring off to revisit their R&B classic “The Boy is Mine,” and talk up other topics from their respective careers.

Monica: "I wanted to speak to you face to face. The more we’re talked about, the more it led it to be difficult, unnecessarily. And I really, really am a straight shooter, and I really do admire what you’ve done musically and what you’ve also had to endure personally. I don't know all of it, but I know some of it."

Brandy: “I have the utmost love and respect for you, as well, no matter, you know, the times where it seemed like I didn't. For somebody to start at 12 years old — the longevity of your career — you never gave up, no matter what you've been through. And I know a lot of the things you've endured, and you're still here.”
