June 1970: Bread Release MAKE IT WITH YOU

It's a cornerstone of soft-rock, and one of the most risque #1 songs of 1970: Bread's "Make It with You." Written by David Gates, the acoustic guitar-powered easy listening classic arrived in June 1970. The song slowly but surely washed across American radio like a wave throughout the summer, the warm, dulcet tones reverberating all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of August 22, 1970.

The group's first top 10 hit, "Make It with You" still stands as the only Bread song to reach #1 in America. In the UK, the single peaked at #5. In the Great White North, the tune hit #2 on the Canada RPM Top Singles chart.

The track's not-so-subtle sentiment was not lost on songwriter David Gates' mom, even if she didn't quite get the lyrics on first listen. It was during a radio interview when she told a story about the time she threw a big party for the songwriter when he returned to his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, inviting local newspaper, television and radio press to celebrate her boy. While Mom Gates was beaming with pride during the interviews, she did admit that she didn't understand why he'd write a song called "Naked with You."
