July 1978: Gerry Rafferty Hits #1 on the Billboard 200 with CITY TO CITY

The months-long grip Saturday Night Fever had over America was finally broken. From January 21, 1978, until July 7, 1978, the double-album set featuring the Bee Gees was the #1 album in America. Then, for the single week of July 8, 1978, the top album in the country was Gerry Rafferty's City to City.

Released on January 20, 1978, at the very beginning of the epic Saturday Night Fever album chart domination, City to City was powered in large part by the massive single, "Baker Street." Released in early February 1978, the song peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 for the week of June 24, 1978. The #1 song in America that week: Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing."  The two tracks would stay locked in the #1 and #2 positions for more than month. The top two spots would finally change on August 5, 1978, when the Rolling Stones took over #1 with "Miss You."

City to City, however, was more than just "Baker Street." The next single from the album, "Right Down the Line," climbed all the way to #12 on the Hot 100 for the week of October 21, 1978. The #1 song in the country that week: Exile's "Kiss You All Over."

Rafferty had a third top 40 hit from the album, when the song "Home and Dry" reached #28 February 1979.
