Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson in Detroit on this day in 1988, Lizzo became a star with her first album for Atlantic Records, but follow-up SPECIAL managed to top it. Described by the singer-songwriter as “one of the most musically badass, daring and sophisticated bodies of work I've done to date,” the 2022 collection reached No.2 on the Billboard album chart. While that success was ensured by such singles as “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready),” “Special” and “About Damn Time” - which hit No.1 on the Billboard singles chart and won a Record of the Year Grammy – one listen to the performer's vulnerable, compassionate lyrics reveals there's plenty of substance on this set as well.
