On this day in 1976, the Ramones made their London debut at the Roundhouse; if UK bands like the Sex Pistols got more notoriety, they also got much of their inspiration (and breakneck tempos) from the Queens quartet. The eponymous debut from Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Tommy was recorded in a little over a week for a little over $6000 – a humble beginning for a set that would later be be cited as one of the greatest alternative albums of all time. Along with fast and fun songs like “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “Beat On The Brat,” the band paid tribute to the '60s pop-rock that inspired them with a cover of Chris Montez's “Let's Dance” and the Searchers-esque jangle of their own “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” The exhilaration of these 14 songs whizzing by in under half-an-hour ensures listeners will be singing “Hey ho, let's go!” along with RAMONES for decades to come.
