New Order
On this day in 1981, New Order started working on their debut album, MOVEMENT, at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England; it was the beginning of one great band and the end of another: Joy Division. Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Peter Hook's former group echoes throughout the collection, which was produced by Joy Division helmer Martin Hannett (and which includes references to that band's late vocalist Ian Curtis). But while it honors the past, the album also displays progression, with the funkier guitar sound of “Senses” and the electronic percussion of “Truth” hinting at future dance and synth-pop glories. The trio (plus new recruit Gillian Gilbert) can be heard reinventing their sound even more clearly on the Collector's Edition of MOVEMENT, which features 10 bonus tracks including non-LP singles like “Ceremony” and “Temptation.”
