Bonzo Dog Band
Led by co-producers/songwriters Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall, The Bonzo Dog Band were spiritual cousins to Monty Python's Flying Circus, and KEYNSHAM, released this month in 1969, captures the U.K. sextet near their peak. If you don't know the name “Horace Batchelor” - a ridiculous radio personality that the boys have some fun with here – don't worry; the 14 originals take cues from familiar source material as well. Parodies of late-1960s rock (“You Done My Brain In”), 1950s doo wop (“We Were Wrong”) and baroque music (“Sport (The Odd Boy)”) are delivered with love as well as wit. As the original sleeve notes warned mothers with children, KEYNSHAM may be inedible, but its mix of rock, music-hall and satire is tasty nonetheless.
