The phenomenal popularity of Peter, Paul & Mary in their heyday was confirmed upon the release of their third album, IN THE WIND – on this day in 1963, the trio held both the No. 1 and No.2 spots on the U.S. album chart. The album also gave Bob Dylan's career a big boost; its dozen tracks include three by the then-little-known songwriter, including a stirring version of “Blowin' In The Wind” that became PP&M's biggest hit to that point and went on to win two Grammy Awards. There are also fine originals (“Very Last Day”) and deft acoustic guitar work here, demonstrating that Peter Yarrow, Noel "Paul" Stookey and Mary Travers were much more than brilliant harmonizers. IN THE WIND encapsulates the folk boom at its peak and remains an inspiring listen.
