Sam Moore and Dave Prater first teamed up in Miami in 1961, but it wasn’t until Atlantic Records’ Jerry Wexler sent the duo to the Stax studios in Memphis that they really took off. With instrumental heavyweights Booker T. & the M.G.'s as the backing band and the songwriting team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter providing most of the material, Sam & Dave’s HOLD ON, I’M COMING soared to the top of the R&B chart in 1966. Both vocalists had backgrounds in gospel music, and the call-and-response excitement of “You Don't Know Like I Know,” “I Take What I Want” and the Top 40 hit title track is palpable. HOLD ON, I’M COMING remains among the best by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.
