With Jefferson Starship’s fifth album, FREEDOM AT POINT ZERO, new arrival Mickey Thomas proved an outstanding lead vocalist in the wake of Grace Slick and Marty Balin’s departure. Veteran drummer Aynsley Dunbar also joined the band for the 1979 collection, which was a Top 10 hit thanks in part to popular lead single “Jane.” Band mainstay Paul Kantner holds the Ship steady as both a performer and a writer; his “Girl with the Hungry Eyes” is one of the set’s highlights, and his interest in futuristic themes pops up in such tracks as “Lightning Rose (Carry the Fire).” FREEDOM AT POINT ZERO is among Jefferson Starship’s most underrated, and we’ll give the Gold-certified collection another spin to wish Thomas a happy 75th birthday.
