Album of the Day

Bjork turned a lot of heads in 1993 with DEBUT, even if it wasn't really her first solo album (we won't count her pre-teen Iceland-only release). While there was a touch of the alternative rock sound favored by her old band, The Sugarcubes, DEBUT is primarily an alternative dance album, highlighted by such singles as “Human Behaviour,” “Big Time Sensuality” and “Violently Happy.” But the set is ultimately as tough to pigeonhole as its creator; the jazzy 1940s standard “Like Someone In Love” and the live-from-a-nightclub-restroom “There's More To Life Than This” are just a couple of songs that will pleasantly surprise listeners (along with Bjork's wonderfully elastic vocals). For an album so eclectic and playful, DEBUT packs a strong emotional punch, and we'll give the Platinum seller another spin now to wish Bjork a very happy birthday.
