RANDY NEWMANSail Away (Expanded & Remastered)$11.98 CD With this 1972 masterpiece, Randy Newman combined elements from his first two albums for a brilliant blend of song craft and far-reaching commentary. Musically adventurous and lyrically irreverent, Sail Away further cemented his status as a pop visionary. In addition to the timeless title track, it features original album classics like “Lonely At The Top” and “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” plus five bonus tracks. Raised in a family of celebrated film composers, Randy Newman has earned a reputation as one of his generation’s top songsmiths. Newman released his eponymous debut in 1968. While the album didn’t get much commercial attention, the critics took notice. He spent the next few years recording critically hailed albums such as Sail Away, Good Old Boys, and Little Criminals, which featured an unlikely hit in the seemingly politically incorrect “Short People.” As he developed a reputation as a sharp-tongued satirist, Newman also faced misinterpretation as the subtle irony in his lyrics was often lost on radio audiences. Newman received his first Academy Award nominations for his 1981 score for Ragtime. In 1983, Trouble In Paradise brought another hit in “I Love L.A.,” a parody that was also taken a bit too literally by some. After a foray into “personal” songwriting with 1988’s Land Of Dreams, he spent most of the next decade composing film scores, earning several OscarĀ® noms for his work on Toy Story and other major motion pictures. While the end of the millennium brought another solo record, Bad Love, and Rhino’s Guilty: 30 Years Of Randy Newman boxed set, 2002 saw Newman’s first OscarĀ® win for “If I Didn’t Have You” from the animated film Monsters Inc.
