Coltrane’s The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings was originally released by Rhino Records in 1995 as both a CD box set and as an album box set. The compact disc version remains in print to this day, but the 1995 album boxed set was released in an edition of only 3,000 hand-numbered copies. It more or less immediately sold out and has been one of the items collectors from around the world have most requested be reissued.

 As a result of those requests, and because of the resurgent interest in vinyl, we are pleased to present Rhino Handmade's first-ever album release that we have slightly re-titled to now be known as The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings [Year 2000 Second Edition Album Box Set].

 1995's The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings collected every master Coltrane recorded for Atlantic Records between 1959 and 1961 (originally released in ten albums between 1960 and 1975) presented in their original album formats, in their original album jackets with their original album notes – all remastered to most closely match the sound created in the studio. This means the original ten Atlantic albums were remastered from the original analog LP masters and that the 2-disc bonus outtakes album, first originated in 1995 to be a part of the CD box set, was mastered from the digital master used to create the bonus disc in the CD box.

 The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings [Year 2000 Second Edition Album Box Set] is a repressing of its 1995 predecessor and, as such, contains exact replicas of all ten original Atlantic John Coltrane albums, as well as the 1995-originated 2-disc outtakes collection, all pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl, an additional 44-page 12.25-inch by 12.25-inch booklet of notes by Coltrane biographer Louis Porter, all handsomely encased in a 12.5-inch by 12.5-inch by 2.25-inch box. Same packaging. Same price as in 1995!

 1,500 copies of this repressing, each individually numbered as a Rhino Handmade Found ObjectTM, will be made available to collectors WITHIN NORTH AMERICA from our Rhino Handmade website. The other 1,500, all unnumbered, will be sent to various Rhino Records partners OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA to be sold as a traditional release at traditional retail outlets.
