Sanctuary are a trio of unique instrumentation: Jeff Reilly on bass clarinet, Christopher Both on cello, and Peter Togni on organ. Much of their music is based on Gregorian chant, but merely as a point of departure. They transcend these ancient materials using improvisation, inventive tonality, and extended techniques to create music that is contemporary, intense, and lyrical. The Heart Has Its Reasons is an album of rich, insightful music that fuses the melodic simplicity of ancient plainsong with the new sounds of free jazz and contemporary classics.
