GENESIS1970-1975 (Box Set) (7CD/6DVD)$139.98 CD In the beginning, Genesis created a musically complex, theatrical, thinking man's progressive rock sound featuring Peter Gabriel on lead vocals. Thriving through ongoing evolution, Genesis went on to become one of the top selling recording acts of all time. In 2006, they celebrated their 40th anniversary with a world tour reuniting Phil Collins - who took over as front-man when Gabriel went solo - and founding members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford onstage for the first time in 15 years. To mark the occasion, Rhino launched a sweeping upgrade of Genesis' catalog that's now complete with GENESIS 1970-1975, the last of three boxed sets spotlighting their epic career. The 7-CD/6-DVD collection presents expanded editions of five studio LPs from the group's seminal Gabriel-fronted years plus an exclusive rarities compilation. GENESIS 1970-1975 was produced by Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford. The five albums featured as expanded CD+DVD editions are: Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and the double album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Each title features the original album, remastered, on CD and a DVD with 5.1 DTS (96/24) and Dolby Digital Surround Sound mixes of the album plus rare and previously unissued bonus video, photo galleries, memorabilia images and new 2007 interviews with the band. The repertoire is rounded out with Extras: 1970-1975, a newly assembled CD/DVD compilation exclusive to this boxed set. For Genesis fans and prog/art-rock enthusiasts alike, the final entry in Rhino's trilogy of Genesis box sets is a fascinating window into a creative and colorful era in U.K. rock. The chronology begins with 1970's Trespass, the start of a five-year journey that saw the band stage ever-more daring feats of progressive rock. The album features guitarist Anthony Phillips and drummer John Mayhew, who were replaced on 1971's Nursery Cryme by Steve Hackett and Phil Collins, respectively. That album found the new line-up artistically redefining itself on tracks including the ten-minute opener “The Musical Box,” “The Return Of The Giant Hogweed” and “The Fountain of Salmacis.” Foxtrot followed in 1972 and was a breakthrough for Genesis, reaching #12 on the British charts and introducing two tracks that would be concert staples for years: “Watcher Of The Skies” and “Supper's Ready.” DVD extras include performances on Belgian television's Rock of the 70s and onstage at the Piper Club in Italy. Selling England ByThe Pound, released in 1973, delivered the band's first U.K. hit single, “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)” plus highlights including “The Cinema Show” and “Firth Of Fifth.” Over 90 minutes of live performance DVD extras include 1973 footage from an Italian television broadcast and from a concert in Bataclan, France. The final of the five original studio releases included in the box is the 1974 double-LP The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Gabriel's final album with Genesis. The title track, “Carpet Crawlers” and “In The Cage” remain popular parts of the band's live shows. DVD extras include a vintage performance on the French television show Melody. The box concludes with the CD/DVD Extras 1970-1975, offered exclusively as part of GENESIS 1970-1975. Audio highlights include the 7” single “Happy The Man,” a demo of “Going Out To Get You,” and the b-side “Twilight Alehouse.” The CD's final four songs - “Provocation,” “Frustration,” “Manipulation,” and “Resignation” - are the legendary “Genesis Plays Jackson” tapes, recorded in 1970 for a documentary about painter Mick Jackson. The documentary was scrapped, and the songs were lost - until now. Bonus DVD highlights include segments from the VH-1 boxed set special on Genesis 1967-1975 and a TV performance from Midnight Special. The companion boxed sets Genesis 1976-1982 and Genesis 1983-1998 are also available from Rhino.
