Cosmic Grooves: Pisces

by Paul Pearson

As a member of the most lambasted sign of the zodiac (admit it -- you think we're spineless jellyfish, don't you? C'mon, this comp even has a track by Jellyfish!) I am most honored and flattered to see the compliments to our good nature and gentle spirit reflected here in such pleasant and powerful numbers as Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" and Andrew Gold's "Thank You for Being a Friend." And yes, you can indeed lean on us as Club Nouveau exhorts you to, and depend on our spirit of forgiveness as referred to in the Jellyfish track.

But I'm going to be honest. We Pisceans are a little ticked off. And we're not going to take it anymore. We've been taken advantage of. We've been stroked and cooed over, then left for dead after we show you the totality of our emotions. You just can't deal with the eternal, can you? You think you can just ignore us and go party with those other, more epidermal signs? You just lose your marbles when the conversation stops bein' all shallow? Huh? You think we're in this for our health? Well, on behalf of fellow Pisceans Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny Cash, Peter Wolf, and Kurt Cobain (hah! We got Kurt! Suckers!), watch your back, 'cause our little twin guppies are mutating into sharks, baby, and there ain't nothin' you can do about it!

Paul is a two-time regional winner of the Rhino Musical Aptitude Test (Los Angeles in 2000, Seattle in 2001). Raised in Sacramento and currently living in Olympia, WA, Paul hosts a hyper-variety radio show, "Shrug Festival," Fridays at 11pm Pacific on KAOS Community Radio (www.kaosradio.org). He's a writer and internet editor, and his hobbies include music (duh) and lighting audiences on fire on karaoke nights at Thekla nightclub in Olympia. He was also in the bands L. Ron Shrubbery and Wonder Woman, who between them have one track that's ever been released to the public. You can contact Paul at shrugfestival@earthlink.net.

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

A word about submissions: We post what you give us, so please don't include your email address or any personal info. Your comments reach Rhino, not necessarily the writer, so don't expect a reply from them (or us, see our help section for contact info). We gather and post your submissions in batches, so do expect a short delay. And don't get bent if we edit your comments. We probably won't, but we reserve that right.
