Brain In A Box: The Science Fiction Collection

by Mac Dunlop

You shouldn't need the good Doctor's advice to investigate this amazing collection, which brings to life the sights and sounds of the science fiction experience over the last half-century. First off, we're talking about a Grammy winner here! That's right, the Brain In A Box took home music's highest honor for Best Package Design. One look at the translucent, brain-revealing panels, metal lid, and variety of analog gauge images adorning this box will have you doing the Martian Hop in no time. In fact, one of my esteemed colleagues (Dr. Vinny Beiter from the Institute of Excessive Consumption in Buffalo) remarked that analog gauges are his "favorite thing in the whole f*@$%! world." While you may not all echo that sentiment, you have to agree that even before opening it, this box set is pretty darn cool.

Now, on to the good stuff waiting for you under the lid. The first thing you'll probably notice is the 200-page hardcover "Brain In A Book." This little gem is chock full of every sci-fi image you could think of, including toys, movie posters, and dime store novels. There are also essays by everyone from Ray Bradbury to Matt Groening, as well as tons of history and track information. This brings us to the music- and what would a Rhino collection be without the music? Well, this collection would be devoid of 113 tracks of cosmic fun. You've got movie & TV themes, pop songs, incidental/lounge music, and novelty numbers liberally spread over 5 CD's. This has got to be the only collection you'll ever find with Ella Fitzgerald, the B-52's, Louis Prima, The Holy Modal Rounders, and Jimmy Durante all on the same disc (singing about UFO's & little green men, no less)!

So, fellow space travelers, it is now time to put your infrared goggles, set your phasers to fun, and embark on the fantastic voyage that is Rhino's Brain In The Box. Come to think of it, you better save a seat for your favorite Doctor, 'cause tonight "We're Going UFO'ING"! .

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

A word about submissions: We post what you give us, so please don't include your email address or any personal info. Your comments reach Rhino, not necessarily the writer, so don't expect a reply from them (or us, see our help section for contact info). We gather and post your submissions in batches, so do expect a short delay. And don't get bent if we edit your comments. We probably won't, but we reserve that right.

ok, so it sounds interesting, but why isn't there a complete list of the tracks or at least a direct link to it?

Well put.

Hello.

I'm a staff editor with an industrial trade magazine, "Paperboard Packaging." I recently saw "Brain in a Box: The Science Fiction Collection" in a catalog, and, as someone who writes about package design for an audience of corrugated and folding carton manufacturers, the packaging of this set caught my attention. Can you tell me which packaging company was involved in design and production of this set? I'd like to look into doing an article on this.

Thanks for any help you could provide.

To the person who left the comment about why there isn't a link to a complete tracklising of this set...it's because it's no longer in print. And I think it sucks how Rhino Records has been putting these great collections out of print for the last few years.
