While the term refers to optical manipulation of light and dark, the band Camera Obscura straddles the aural line between sunshine and darkness.
On Let's Get Out Of This Country, the Scottish band's shimmering pop is hiding an embittered, scorned secret. Produced by Jari Haapalainen, Camera Obscura are perky, yet pessimistic, shrouding brooding with bubbly guitars and soaring keyboards. Lead singer/songwriter Tracyanne Campbell evokes the sweet sensibilities of a '60s songstress, but with enough sass to make the prom queen flip her bouffant wig.
Country's opening track, "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken," is a response record 22 years in the making, answering Lloyd Cole & The Commotions' "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken." Camera Obscura delve further into past rejection on "Dory Previn," a heart-wrenching tribute to the tortured singer-songwriter who lost her husband to a young Mia Farrow. "The False Contender" evokes modern-day Leslie Gore. The sugarcoated ironies are best showcased against the mod-revival beat of "If Looks Could Kill," while "Tears For Affairs" evokes pre-electronic Everything But The Girl. The band is at its prettiest and most poignant with the haunting despair of "Country Mile."
Let's Get Out Of This Country proves that darling can be dangerous.
