Golden Throats

"Perhaps I should be embarassed that my all-time favorite Rhino CD is not one of our prestigious, exhaustively-annotated multi-disc box sets. But whenever I cue up the first volume of Golden Throats on my CD player, I feel as free of shame as its celebrity vocalists must have felt when they tried to make their mark in rock history. While a few of the cuts are merely mediocre, most artist/song pairings are more amazing than Houdini and David Copperfield put together. Listen to Mr. French do Dylan or Sgt. Friday do Otis Redding and you'll wonder 'How'd they do that? And, more importantly, why?' And then there are three tracks that really take me to the moon. Hearing Captain Kirk "sing" puts a smile on my face every single time without fail. I'm hard-pressed to think of another record that does that. And I'm so glad they closed the disc with Mr. Spock's 'If I Had A Hammer,' because what could possibly follow that? Would I join guys who sing like this to go where no man has gone before and risk life and limb battling Klingons and Romulans? You better believe it."

A word about submissions: We post what you give us, so please don't include your email address or any personal info. Your comments reach Rhino, not necessarily the writer, so don't expect a reply from them (or us, see our help section for contact info). We gather and post your submissions in batches, so do expect a short delay. And don't get bent if we edit your comments. We probably won't, but we reserve that right.
